The Merrill Fire Department (MFD) was called to 309 S. Foster St. in Merrill’s 6th Ward at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026.
The department’s ambulance was already out on another call, so the Engine 61 crew responded. Firefighters found smoke coming from the back of the house, forced their way in, and put out the fire. They then checked inside walls and other hidden spaces to make sure it was completely out.
Three cats were rescued, and all family members were out of the home when firefighters arrived; no one was hurt in the fire.
The residents can’t stay in the home for now but found lodging locally. The American Red Cross was called to help the family.
The Merrill Police Department and Wisconsin Public Service also assisted at the scene.
The fire is still under investigation. Early findings suggest it was accidental, according to the MFD.
