Allison H. ‘Oopie’ English

Allison H. ‘Oopie’ English, age 91, of Merrill, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill.

Oopie was born October 15, 1926, in Merrill, son of the late Harold and Martha (Hostman) English.  He married Nancy Atwater on May 28, 1949, at Christ United Methodist Church, Merrill.  She survives.  Oopie served his country in the United States Navy.  During World War II, he served in the South Pacific.  He also served stateside during the Korean War.  Oopie was a life member of V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill.  Oopie served the Merrill community as a police officer and after 27 years of service, he retired as Captain of the Merrill Police Department.   Oopie also did caretaker maintenance for Dr. Beyer and Dr. Lane, and for John Figi’s property in Park Falls.  Oopie also worked part time for Lincoln Community Bank.  He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers. In his younger years, Oopie was a player and manager in the Lincoln County Baseball League, and he also played for the Merrill Foxes and Merrill Rangers.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy English, Merrill; daughter, Cindy (John) Swope, Merrill; sons, Dennis (Michelle) English and Bruce (Jean) English, both of Merrill; nine grandchildren, Dennis (Nichole) English, Jr., Tim English, Heather (Jimmy) Lloyd, Abby English, Marissa Swope (Ryan Young), Lindsay (Dan) Kalupa, Andi English (Dylan Koss), Chan (Jenna) Copas and Chandra Kressel; thirteen great-grandchildren, Allyson, Jillian, Ethan, Grace, Chase, Ayden, Emilie, Haley, Hannah, Erica, Logan, Ariel and Gunnar; two step great-great-grandchild; sister, Nancy Gartman, Merrill; brother, Richard (Grace) English, Green Bay; and brothers-in-law, Fritz Heller, Gleason and Duane Tomacjik, Merrill.  Oopie was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Marcella Schneider, Lyle English, Bonita Heller, Sanford ‘Sandy’ English, Margie English, James ‘Jimmy’ English, Donna Tomacjik and Bruce G. English.

The funeral service for Allison ‘Oopie’ English will be held at 12:00 P.M., Noon, Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Christ United Methodist Church, Merrill.  The Rev. Ho Lee will officiate.  Burial will take place at Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the church.  Taylor-Stine Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Merrill, is assisting the family with arrangements.
