The Hatchets may not have the quantity, but they sure showed some quality in Saturday’s season-opening Oconto Invite.
Despite forfeiting three weight classes, Tomahawk placed a solid second to Shiocton, out-distancing their hosts by 80 points.
“That’s about where we should be,” THS coach Bob Garrou said. “We’ll forfeit three spots until we get some kids down to weight. That hurts. The kids showed a lot of heart and that they’re in shape already. Overall, I thought they wrestled really well.”
The two THS returning state place-winners grabbed titles. Champion Dane Borchardt took the 285 class with a pair of pins, while Kaleb Kaminski (4th) won at 195 with three falls.
“I think we’ll have a lot of (titles),” Garrou said. “They’re both pretty dang good.”
Runner-up places were turned in by Brady Andersen (126), Chase Erdman (145), Quinton Wallenfang (182), Zach Steffonick (195) and Ches Olson (220). Thirds came from Wyatt Wenninger (138) and Jake Matti (170), while Blake Carstensen (132), Matt Turkiewicz (152) and Bryce Bishop (160) all finished fourth.
Team standings – Shiocton 400, Tomahawk 305, Oconto 235, Crandon 208, Wabeno 180, Shawano 111.
