Richard (Rich) J. Shorey, Jr. lost a short but courageous battle with illness on Saturday, June 28, 2025. In his final days, Rich was in the compassionate care of Palliative and Comfort Care at Aspirus Hospital in Merrill, where he received comfort and support during his brief illness.
Rich was born April 12, 1968 to Richard J. Shorey, Sr. and the late Judith Lange in Merrill WI.
Rich graduated from Merrill High School, and went on to further his education by learning a variety of trades through NTC in Wausau WI and Taylor Technologies in Iron Mountain MI.
Rich was employed at several factories in the Merrill area, where he honed his skills. Rich also worked in Finley North Dakota for Lakeside Construction, where he took great pride in his work. He was proud to have found his dream job as Senior Designer at DL Integrated Solutions, Wausau WI, and a position that brought him deep fulfillment and joy, and where he felt truly at home.
Rich enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers. Whether cheering on his team or working in the garage, he found happiness in the simple things – tinkering with engines big or small and always ready to lend a hand. He shared a special bond with his German Shepherd, Ruger. One of his favorite pastimes was playing fetch with Ruger who was always ready for another toss of the ball or stick, and taking Ruger for special rides around the country side. He delighted in making others smile and laugh, sharing his humor freely with loved ones and anyone lucky enough to cross his path.
Rich and Kristine’s love story began in 1999 at Schult’s Country Inn, where she gave him her phone number, certain she had just met the man she was meant to spend her life with.
Rich is survived by his wife of 22 years, Kristine of Merrill WI. His children Michael Shorey of Trempealeau County, Kristina (Jason) Konerza of Silver Lake MN. Brother Timothy (Angela) Shorey of Merrill WI, Sister Renee Shorey of Rothschild WI. Nieces Nicole (Brennon) O’Connell of Wausau WI & Ashlyn Shorey of Merrill WI, Nephew Taylor Shorey of Rothschild WI, five grandchildren and one great nephew. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Ruger, his loyal companion and constant sidekick.
Rich is preceded in death by his grandparents Leslie & Harriet Lange. His mother Judith Lange, and Uncles Wayne Lange and Leslie Lange, Jr. Along with two previous beloved labs, Sam and May May.
In accordance with Rich’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral or memorial service. Instead, a Celebration of his Life will be held at Schult’s Country Inn at a later date, to be announced.
