Pigs perish in Pine River shed fire

Posted

The Pine River Fire Department (PRFD) was dispatched to a structure fire on Pine River Rd. in the Town of Pine River at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025.
“The initial report at 11:40 p.m. was an outbuilding was on fire with multiple exposures,” the PRFD said in a press release the next day.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies were the first to arrive on scene and “reported the building was fully engulfed,” the release said.
Firefighters from the PRFD successfully extinguished the fire “with only minor damage to a nearby shed and livestock trailer.”
The initial structure on fire—a shed that had housed some animals—was a total loss, and multiple pigs perished in the blaze. At least two pigs escaped unharmed; the exact number of pigs that perished was not immediately available.
Initially, Town of Texas and Town of Hewitt Fire Departments were also requested to the scene, but those requests were canceled prior to their arrival.
“The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical,” said Capt. Mike Caylor, PIO of the PRFD.
