Local photographer on year-long journey through southern national parks

Posted

Merrill resident and volunteer photographer Joseph Frederick is on a year-long adventure to explore national parks across the southern United States, accompanied by his dog Rascal.
Frederick, who has contributed photos of Merrill High School sports and other community events to the Merrill Foto News for several years, began his journey in early November and is documenting it through images and videos.
“My objective is to visit parks within a one-month timeframe per state,” Frederick said.
His original plan to begin in South Carolina changed due to cold weather, redirecting him to Arizona instead.
“The daytime temperatures here are quite favorable, though nighttime temperatures can fall below 30 degrees,” Frederick said.

Frederick is sharing scenic photographs on his Facebook page, “Lincoln County WI Photos,” and said he may also include cultural events from each state.
Frederick welcomes suggestions from followers about locations they’d like to see photographed. Currently, he is in New Mexico by popular demand from his Facebook audience.
He said his page will also feature videos offering insights and practical advice for travelers considering visits to each state. For instance, “San Lorenzo offers a complimentary camping experience, and I consider it to be an exceptional location,” he said. “The area is remarkably scenic.” San Lorenzo Canyon is in Lemitar, New Mexico.
“I intend to launch a YouTube channel dedicated to showcasing the photographic settings I use,” Frederick said. “I will provide an update on my Facebook page once the YouTube channel is operational.”
“I am indeed having a very positive experience,” Frederick said of his adventure.
Along with taking photos, other really interesting encounters add to the odyssey. He enjoys talking with the people he meets along the way and hearing their stories, and is often awestruck at the beauty of each place he visits. Taking in his surroundings puts him more in touch with his spiritual side, as he is amazed by all that God has created.
Frederick’s itinerary is flexible, and he remains open to opportunities as they arise. Recently, one such moment occurred that diverted him for a good cause.
“During my stay at one of the campsites in Socorro, New Mexico, I discovered an undernourished lost dog,” Frederick said. “I subsequently expended significant effort to locate a no-kill shelter.”
“While this impacted my budget, I believe it was a worthwhile endeavor,” he said. Ultimately, though, a shelter called him “and said they had a great place for him.”
Those interested in following Frederick’s journey can find updates on the “Lincoln County WI Photos” Facebook page.
