Callahan encounters volatile situation in Madison

Posted

State Representative Calvin Callahan faced a threatening encounter near the Capitol recently when an individual attacked his vehicle as he was leaving Madison.
The Tomahawk Republican was merging from E. Washington Ave. onto WI-30 when a man entered the roadway and threw a bicycle at the car ahead of him. The individual then picked up the bike and charged at Callahan’s vehicle, blocking his path while shouting incoherently.
Callahan maneuvered away from the man and called 911; other witnesses also reported the incident to authorities.
Madison Police responded to the scene and later found the individual acting aggressively at a nearby gas station. Upon arrest, police discovered the man had an outstanding warrant and was also in possession of a methamphetamine pipe.
Callahan said he appreciated the fast police response, but he is concerned by what he sees as increasing volatility in public spaces throughout Wisconsin.

“This was an unpredictable situation,” Callahan said. “You don’t expect something like this to happen just blocks from the Capitol. It was a reminder that personal safety can change in an instant.”
“I’m thankful this ended without injury, but it highlights why ensuring public safety in every community must remain a top priority.”
“I’m always thankful to return home to God’s Country every week,” he said.
