A March 31, 2025, press release from Aspirus Health confirmed their plans for a $40 million renovation and expansion at Aspirus Merrill Hospital is on track to start construction this coming summer.
The project reflects Aspirus’ ongoing commitment to enhancing health care access, quality, and patient experience in the Merrill area, the release said.
“As part of the renovation, several inpatient rooms will be completely rebuilt with modern features that include new lighting, built-in storage, rubber flooring, and integrated patient lifts to improve both comfort and safety. The design will also introduce a fresh, calming aesthetic inspired by nature, local heritage, and the community’s rich history,” Aspirus said in the release.
Upon completion, Aspirus Merrill Hospital will double their inpatient bed count, going from 10 to 20 beds. Additional updates will encompass “imaging, rehabilitation, laboratory, pharmacy services, and several public and staff areas.”
“Sustainability is a key focus of the project, with upgrades such as full window replacements, a new energy-efficient roof, and other infrastructure improvements that will enhance building performance and reduce environmental impact,” the release said. “Aspirus remains committed to strengthening rural care access and looks forward to renovations beginning later this year.”
Merrill Aspirus Hospital is one of 18 hospitals operated by Aspirus Health, a nonprofit, community-directed health system based in Wausau, serving northeastern Minnesota, northern and central Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The organization also operates 130 outpatient locations.
