The City of Merrill Parks & Recreation Department (Parks & Rec) is celebrating a changing of the guard, honoring the retirement of longtime Recreation Manager Dawn Smith while welcoming Emily Heckendorf as her successor.
Smith is retiring after 22 years of service with the department. During her tenure, she helped launch several programs that have become community traditions, including the Ladies Lifestyle Expo and Winter Wonderland, a holiday event that has become a favorite among Merrill families. She also developed recreational programming for individuals with special needs, expanding access to recreation for residents throughout the community. The department credited Smith’s relationships with participants, volunteers, and coworkers, along with her professionalism and dedication, as part of her lasting legacy.
Smith will pass the baton to Heckendorf to pick up where she left off. Heckendorf holds a master’s degree in sports management and has built a strong connection with the Merrill community over the years. She has worked seven seasons with the department’s Summer Playground Program and spent two years as an arena specialist at the Smith Center Arena. She has also spent the past six years as a special education teacher with Merrill Area Public Schools, in addition to serving as the community’s Special Olympics coach and coaching youth hockey and Merrill High School girls softball.
“Emily’s passion for recreation, education, and community service makes her a perfect fit for this position,” said Parks & Recreation Director Dan Wendorf. “She understands the importance of creating quality recreational opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities. Her enthusiasm, leadership, and experience will help us continue to grow and enhance the outstanding programs and facilities our community enjoys.”
As Recreation Manager, Heckendorf will oversee the department’s recreational programs, special events, facilities, and community initiatives, working with residents, volunteers, and community organizations to continue expanding recreational opportunities throughout Merrill.
“I am incredibly excited to join the Parks & Recreation Department in this new role,” Heckendorf said. “Having worked with the department in the past, I know firsthand how important parks and recreation are to our community. I’m looking forward to building on the department’s strong tradition of excellence, creating new opportunities for residents, and helping make Merrill an even better place to live, play, and connect.”
