Aldermen respond to recall initiative

Monday afternoon, the five Merrill city alderman affected by a recent recall effort, issued the following statement in response to the matter.
“We, the incumbent aldermen, certainly respect the right of the people to use the political process. As duly elected representatives of our districts, some elected multiple times, we have sought to move Merrill forward over our terms in office. Moving a city forward takes investment. If we want people to want to bring their families here, businesses to want to locate here, and visitors to return again and again, that requires investment and long-range planning. For many decades, the city did not pursue an aggressive growth strategy. Now, we’re playing catch-up to be sure we don’t end up like many Midwestern communities facing changing demographics and economic shifts – a slow persistent decline.
“We have made progress. As you look around our city, you can see that progress. The job of government is to create the conditions that encourage growth to happen. New businesses have located here, existing businesses have expanded, new housing is being developed and blighted properties have been eliminated or revitalized. The city has worked to replace lead pipes in the water system; staying ahead of many other municipalities that have only recently discovered this dangerous issue. Deferring and delaying maintenance and construction of infrastructure has required more investment than if it had been maintained on a regular schedule.
“Partnerships between the city, area organizations, and philanthropists have brought recreation and entertainment to Merrill that will pay dividends for many years to come. The former Lincoln County fairgrounds, now the Merrill Festival Grounds, showcases new buildings and updated facilities; attracting entertainment, which in turn attracts visitors and their economic stimulus. The River Bend Trail and the new aquatic center are becoming a destination for active families, residents and visitors alike. Because we are following a long-range plan, we know there is much more to come.”
“You as a resident of Merrill can, at any time, can ask a city official, or city staff member questions or express concerns that you might have, and you are encouraged to do so. We know there are choices to be made and challenges to face. We are excited for the future,”
