Two area veterans honored with Quilts of Honor

On February 3, two brave men were honored for their selfless service to the United States of America. Both received quilts through the VFW Auxiliary Post 1638 Quilt of Honor program. Elmer Lemke served in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1953 – 1955 and the United States Army from November 1955 through October 1957. Elmer was a Meteorologist Artillery Ballistic. He checked wind speed, direction, temperature, and humidity to predict where the artillery would land. During his service, Lemke received the Army Good Conduct Medal. Donald Radloff served in the United States Navy from September 1950 through July 1954. Donald served on the USS Bryce Canyon as a Store Keeper, 3rd Class. He earned the following recognition for his courageous service: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and National Defense Ribbon. Donald went on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight in October 2013. He is a 50 year plus member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1638, Schmitt-Manecke-Donner, Merrill.
