Public meeting slated on fair voting maps in Wisconsin

The citizens of Lincoln County will have an opportunity on Nov. 6 to say whether they want fair voting maps in Wisconsin instead of gerrymandering.

On Oct. 29, the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods (LWVNOW) is holding an educational event on this issue at 5:30 p.m. at T. B. Scott Free Library, 106 1st St., Merrill.

There will be four speakers to give information, background, and an explanation of how fair voting maps affect you as a citizen. You will hear from:

•Bill Whitford, retired UW law professor, and the named plaintiff in the Supreme Court case of Whitford vs Gill on Fair Voting Maps in Wisconsin,

•Matt Rothschild, President of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, a nonpartisan watchdog group working for clean, open and honest government,

•Hans Breitenmoser, a Lincoln County Board member, instrumental in getting the Fair Voting Maps Resolutions passed in Lincoln and many other counties, and

•Dorothy Skye, President of the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods, filling you in on why the League is involved in this matter.

The Redistricting Referendum is currently only on the ballot in Lincoln County, however gerrymandering is a statewide issue. This event will be a powerhouse of information to help all area residents understand this critical issue, assisting the residents of Lincoln County in making an informed decision when they vote, and updating all residents on the current status of the Supreme Court case for Fair Voting Maps in Wisconsin.

The LWVNOW is a non-partisan political organization that neither supports nor opposes candidates for office at any level of government. The League has fought since 1920 to improve U. S. systems of government and impact public policy through education and advocacy. You can contact them at [email protected].
