Hatchet football tops Rhinelander

The Tomahawk High School football team is off to a 2-0 start after taking down the Hodags on the road last Friday.

Rhinelander scored on their opening possession to take a quick 7-0 lead, but Tomahawk would battle back with a one-yard touchdown run by Cody Scholz in the second quarter. The Hodags held a 7-6 lead at halftime.

Max Bembinster punched in the lone touchdown of the second half with a 1 yard run. A successful two-point conversion gave Tomahawk the 14-7 lead, which held up for the win.

Tomahawk pounded the ball on the ground all night, amassing 229 rushing yards. Bembinster got the heavy workload, with 25 carries for 169 yards; followed by Scholz (11 carries for 35 yards).
The Hatchet defense held Rhinelander to 199 total yards.

“Offensively we have been able to run the ball consistently, especially between the tackles,” said Hatchet head coach John Larson. “Where we need to get better is in the passing game. That will be our focus this week in practice.

“Our guys showed a lot of grit in this game,” he added. “It didn’t come easy, but we stayed confident, kept our composure and got a huge win!”
