Hatchet gridmen look good in opener
The Tomahawk Hatchet football team kicked off their 2018 campaign with a 20-14 home win over Shiocton Friday night.
The Hatchets went up 14-7 by halftime and tacked on six more in the third quarter. Shiocton came back with a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t close the gap on Tomahawk.
Tomahawk put up 331 total yards of offense; 246 rushing and 85 passing. Leading the Hatchet attack were Max Bembinster (23 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown), Cody Scholz (11 carries for 48 yards) and Wyatt Wenninger (12 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown). Wenninger was 6-10 passing for 77 yards and a touchdown. Leading receivers were Bembinster (3 catches for 21 yards) and Cody Jablonski (3 catches for 37 yards and a touchdown).
The Hatchet D held Shiocton to 209 total yards. Tomahawk dominated time of possession, running 62 offensive plays to Schiocton’s 36.
“Overall, this was a great team victory,” said Hatchet coach John Larson. “You don’t win if you don’t play as a team. We played with confidence and poise. There was never any signs of panic. If we can play like that on a consistent basis we will have a lot of success in 2018.”
