Simon and Garfunkel Experience coming to Merrill

When you think of the 1960s, and the music which revolutionized and defined new musical genres, you’re bound to remember Simon and Garfunkel. Their blending of folk and rock brought forth an original sound that made them superstars, counter-culture icons, and eventually Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees.

While Simon & Garfunkel didn’t last long as a duo, their songs endure. As a tribute to their music, the Merrill Area Concert Association presents the Guthrie Brothers live in concert on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Merrill High School Auditorium.

Although Jeb and Jock Guthrie are now based on the East Coast, the brothers have Wisconsin roots! Indeed, the Guthries, who recall singing together for as long as either one of them can remember, got their careers started by practicing in the basement of their Green Bay home. Listeners get to enjoy the fruit of their efforts: smooth vocal harmonies and fine guitar work that truly captures the great American music of Simon & Garfunkel.

You will be astonished by the Guthrie Brothers’ authentic rendition of Sound of Silence, their playful version of Cecilia, and many other classic tunes, performed in an “unplugged” style that features acoustic guitars. By playfully engaging your memories of the ‘60s through songs, stories, trivia and humor, you’ll be sure to be smiling and singing along by the second song.

You’re welcome to become a Merrill Area Concert Association member and enjoy the Guthrie Brothers, as attendance is by membership only. Purchasing a season membership not only supports the association, it’s a great value – you can enjoy all the remaining MACA concerts, and all of Antigo’s and Medford’s concert association performances too. While you can purchase a membership on concert night, it’s best to call in advance so you don’t miss a minute of entertainment.
