Boys hold off West
By Jared Schmeltzer
On Friday night the Merrill boys basketball team traveled to Wausau West to take on the Warriors in the back end of a double header. After watching the Lady Jays get the win, the boys were able to get a similar outcome as they took the 58-56 victory.
The first half of play didn’t go the way Merrill wanted as they would end up trailing the Warriors by seven. The Merrill offense was able to muster up only 27 points in the first half with Quinn Steckbauer leading the way with 12. Steckbauer was on fire from deep hitting three three-pointers in the half. Nate Grefe was able to do his part as he had a solid five points in the half. Zach Mootz had a tough time scoring as he was held to just three first half points, all coming from the free throw line.
In the second half of play the Bluejay defense stepped up only allowing West to score 22 points, while Merrill put up 31 to get the two point advantage and win. Steckbauer kept his solid game going with nine second half points, six of which came from the free throw line. Mootz was able to pick up the slack in the second half as he went for nine points with seven of them coming via free throws. Olhoff put up seven points in the second half with all but one of his points coming down low.
Steckbauer led the Jays in scoring with 21 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out three assists and snagging one steal. Mootz would end the game with 12 points, 10 of which coming from the free throw line. Mootz also had seven rebounds, three assists and a steal. Olhoff finished with 10 points, three rebounds, and a steal.
The Bluejays will look to keep their winning ways as they take a trip to SPASH this Friday with the tip off at 7:15 p.m.
