Concealed meat package leads to retail theft charge for Merrill man

On the evening of Sunday September 25th, Merrill officers responded to a reported shoplifting complaint at a local grocery store.

According to officer notes, upon arriving at the store contact was made with 58-year-old David Torkelson. Torkelson reportedly admitted attempting to shoplift a package of meat which he had concealed in his pants. Torkelson was found to be on probation for Retail Theft and was taken into custody on a probation hold as well as a charge of Retail Theft.
Torkelson reportedly had arrived at the store and shoplifted earlier Sunday evening, but had departed prior to officer arrival. Store staff indicated Torkelson had shoplifted on other occasions throughout the week before.
