Merrill man taken into custody following apparent theft and struggle with police

Thursday afternoon, officers responded to a suspicious activity report at a west-side store. Upon arrival, officers met with a store staff member who indicated observing a male rummaging through a ladies’ wallet in one of the store restrooms.
According to officer notes, upon contact with the male he appeared very nervous and reportedly denied being in the restroom. While attempting to search the male, he reportedly fled the store on foot and ran into an elderly female in the store foyer. In an attempt to stop the fleeing suspect, the officer deployed a TASER which reportedly had no effect on the male. The pursuit continued into the parking lot where the suspect fell to the ground and following a brief struggle during which he reportedly pushed an officer, he was successfully taken into custody.
Upon further investigation the male suspect was found to be on probation. It was later discovered the male had ingested a large quantity of Methamphetamine and Oxycodone. Due to other circumstances and the eventual involvement of staff from Northcentral Health Care Center, the identity of the male is not being released.
