Hatchets take Lakeland to the buzzer, chop Pines

The Tomahawk boys basketball team split a pair in GNC action last week.
Last Tuesday night, fans were treated to a great game in the THS Fieldhouse between Tomahawk and Lakeland. Lakeland prevailed with a 49-46 win.
Tomahawk got a basket in the lane from Justin Jarvensivu with :40 seconds left to tie the game at 46-46. With under :05 seconds to play, Lakeland’s Jack Melms drove the lane and hit Tavian RisingSun Doud in the right corner for a three, which he hit. The Hatchets called a timeout, but with 1.9 seconds remaining, couldn’t get the game tieing shot off and Lakeland gets the win.
Lakeland led 27-25 at the half. Tomahawk trailed early, but continued to stick to their game plan and eventually tied the game.
In the second half, Lakeland went on an early run and gained a six point advantage. After a timeout, Tomahawk cut the lead and it was back and forth action from that point on.
“It was a tough loss, but we did really play a great game,” said THS coach Tim Albert. “We executed very well on offense and played a good defensive game. I thought we controlled their dribble penetration better in the second half and forced them to work for everything they got.”
Tethering the Eagles
On Friday night, the Hatchets traveled to Eagle River to take on the Northland Pines Eagles. The Hatchets prevailed with a 69-57 win to improve to 7-13 overall and 2-9 in the GNC.
The Hatchets led throughout Friday night’s game, and led 35-30 at the half.
The second half was a game of runs, as the Hatchets would make a run and see Northland Pines go on a run of their own. In the end, Tomahawk was able to get a 12-point victory, sealing the win down the stretch with great free throw shooting. Tomahawk was 6-6 from the foul line in the final two minutes of play.
“This was a big win for us,” Albert said. “We played a very good offensive game. We really ran our stuff well and were very aggressive. We attacked when the opportunity presented itself and shared the ball well.”
Scoring came from Justin Jarvensivu (25), Easton Phalin (16), Brandon Vecchio (13), Isaac Weber (5), Andrew Cook (3), Erik Zedler and Riley Tollison ( 2 each) and Jacob Zietlow (1).
