Differences in cultural values bring about conflict in some areas of the world. Learning about their cultural values may help us better understand the differences. Students at Merrill High School can be proud of their own individual cultural heritage. At the same time, they should have the opportunity to gain knowledge about other cultures and individuals. This year’s cultural murals acquaint students with various cultures around the world and encourage a respect for the values of others.
Ten Merrill High School Art students spent two weeks last summer painting 2.5’ x 6’murals that were installed into the commons of the high school. This year, the focus was cultural diversity. Each selected student chose a different country and then researched the art, history, and social customs of the culture. From their research, students designed an original composition based on their country’s cultural heritage.
The selection process for the Honors Art Mural Painting workshop is a prestigious one. Students are selected to participate in the workshop by demonstrating outstanding artistic talent and commitment as they complete a year of intense study in drawing and painting. They must show an excellent work ethic along with evidence of being able to commit to this huge endeavor.
This year’s mural artists are McKenzie Broeking, Serena Helman, Courtney Hinz, Jeza Kleinschmidt, Katie Nelson, Kendyl Pettit, Tristen Prebeg, Mathew Ruge, Nicole Seidler, and Emily Wegner. An annual open house and reception honoring the ten student mural artists will be held on Feb. 13, 2016 from 1–4 p.m. at the high school. Along with the Open House, an annual art alumni show is planned.
