The Hatchet boys picked up their pace in last Tuesday’s dual meet with Medford, stroking out a 97-53 victory.
“The THS boys looked really strong,” head coach Marion Kohl said. “The score and official results don’t fully reflect the actual swimming that the Hatchets did, because we decided to swim several of the end of meet events as exhibition, so as not to run up the score on the Raiders.
“The Raiders are a small team with only 9 swimmers… very young and inexperienced, and they also have a new coach this year.”
The Hatchets posted the top 3 times in the 50 free (Logan Loretz, (:24.92/Peyton Hamm, :25.64/Tyler Larch :25.84), 100 back (Jacob Miller, 1:16.32/Devon Liebnitz, 1:24.61/Josh Wick, 1:30/06) and 100 brea (Parker Knipfer, 1:20.94/ Evan Ploeckman, 1:28.39/Kole Svacina, 1:31.49).
They went 1-2 in the: 200 IM (Svacina, 2:40.69/Miller, 2:53.53); 100 fly (Knipfer, 1:12.81/Lucas Tjugum, 1:25.67); 100 free (Loretz, :56.90/Hamm, :58.16); 200 medley relay (Svacina, Loretz, Nathan Goehe, Hamm, 1:58.63/James Zastrow, Brandon Pankow, Troy VanStrydonk, Mike Schumitssch, 2:18.783); and 200 free rel. (Liebnitz, Wick, Ploeckelman, Knipfer, 2:00.47/Zastrow, Pankow, VanStrydonk, Schumitsch, 2:18.83).
THS also posted the fastest time in the: 500 free (Goehe, 5:58.15); and 400 free rel. (Goehe, Hamm, Tjugum, Loretz, 4:06.40). Tom Reiter was the 200 free runner-up (2:27.13).
Rhinelander races
The shoe was on the other foot in Saturday’s high-quality Hodag Relays. The Hatchets ranked 6th of seven teams with 76 points, while the hosts won it 120.
“The guys really came together well as a team, and many of them swam some things that they might not normally compete in, so it’s going to give us some ideas to work with,” Kohl said.
The Hatchets ranked 3rd in the 400 IM (Liebnitz, Ploeckelman, Svacina, Loretz, 4:58.63), 400 free (Hamm, Larch, Tjugum, Goehe, 4:03.04) and 300 brea (Ploeckelman, Loretz, Knipfer, 4:03.04), The 200 medley (Svacina, Loretz, Goehe, Hamm, 1:57.59) was 4th.
Team Standings – Rhinelander 120, Superior 112, Green Bay United 100, Lakeland 92, Marshfield 90, Tomahawk 76, Shawano 68.
