Randell “Randy” Gatterman

Randell “Randy” Gatterman, age 68, of Merrill, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Woodland Court under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services. He was born November 22, 1946 in Merrill to the late Bernard & Marion (Hughes) Gatterman. Randy and Marian “Mary” Johnson were united in marriage on February 7, 1970 in Merrill. She survives.
Randy was a 1965 graduate of Merrill Senior High School. He served in the United States Air Force as a dog handler in the Air Police division. Randy worked for MAPS as a custodian for over 20 years. He enjoyed going to work every day and loved visiting with the kids. Randy’s family was the most important thing in his life, especially his children and grandchildren. He was very proud of his children, their education and accomplishments. The true definition of sportsman was the best way to describe Randy: “one who pursues the sports of the field, such as hunting, etc”. Through the years he hunted everything, but most recently enjoyed duck hunting. Randy was proud to say he taught his children how to hunt and loved showing others the joy of hunting. He was an animal lover and especially loved his hound dogs. Fishing was another activity Randy truly enjoyed. He took pleasure in driving and taking his family for rides. He loved including his children in all of his hobbies. Randy was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Randy is survived by his wife: Marian “Mary” Gatterman, Merrill; two daughters: Colleen (John) Carmona, Madison, and Raegan (Aaron) Zuelsdorff, Merrill; son: Patrick (Kari) Gatterman, Friendship; seven grandchildren: Stella, Laney, Lauren, Alyssa, Erica, Kale & Madeline; and one sister: Susan Gatterman, Madison, He was preceded in death by his parents, three uncles, William, Arthur and Grant Hughes, and one aunt, Betty Hughes.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Waid Funeral Home. Rev. Kevin Hoogland will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of service, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Randy’s name will be used to establish a scholarship fund for Merrill students.
