Elmer J. Nelson, age 91, of Merrill, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.
Elmer was born October 29, 1923, in Merrill, son of the late Hans and Emma (Waldburger) Nelson. He married Janet Schmidt on October 4, 1980. She preceded him in death on November 18, 2014. Elmer was a dairy farmer in the Irma area. He was hard working and maintained a ‘good’ farm. Elmer enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting, fishing and trapping and spending time around Copper Lake. He was involved in various church activities. He served on the Town of Birch Town Board and also served on the former Copper Lake School Board. Elmer was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Irma.
Survivors include his sister, Helen Theiler of Tomahawk; his sister-in-law, Della Nelson of Merrill; his nieces and nephew, Sandy (Gary) Hass of Merrill, Sharon (Tom) Thrall of Minocqua, Cynthia Gunderson of Wausau, Philip (Darcy) Theiler of Arbor Vitae, and Nancy (Norbert) Pintons of Rice Lake; and his grandnephew, Mark Baumann of Kileen, TX. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Emma Nelson; his brother, Harry Nelson; and his niece, Judy Baumann.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 29, 2015, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Irma. The Rev. Joel Danner will officiate. Burial will take place at Chat Cemetery, Town of Birch. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. Monday at the church. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family with arrangements.
