Shots fired in conflict between ATV rider, landowner

A 39-year-old Merrill man was jailed and a 19-year-old Merrill man will be cited after the Lincoln County Rec. Deputy investigated the report of a shooting on Friday evening in the Town of Corning.
The 19-year-old phoned 911 just after 7:30 p.m. to report he was shot at while riding his four wheeler off of Forks Rd. The Rec. Deputy was aware several neighbors have lodged complaints in the past of ATV’s running on private property and the 19-year-old was warned in the past about this.
The 19-year-old told the deputy he was riding on the neighbor’s property when he was confronted by the man who had a rifle. As the 19-year-old went to drive away he heard a shot and then two additional shots which he thought hit the ground near him.
When the Rec. Deputy located the land owner, he admitted to confronting the man and firing the shots in order to scare him. The land owner told the deputy he knew his actions were wrong but he was frustrated by the ongoing issue of trespassing by the suspect.
The 39-year-old was taken into custody on charges of disorderly conduct and endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon. He was brought to the Lincoln County Jail where he was able to post a cash bond and be released. The 19-year-old will be cited for operating on another’s property without consent, having expired registration on his ATV and also for littering.
