During Girl Scout Week, March 9–15, we recognize what girl scouts are doing in the Merrill Community. Girl Scouts serves girls in the Merrill area from Kindergarten through grade 12, as Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Scouts. Girls participate in troops at Washington, Jefferson, Kate Goodrich, PRMS, MHS, St. Francis, Trinity and St. John’s, and as Individual Girl Members.
Girls in troops work on badge activities and journeys – at troop meetings or by visiting local organizations or businesses. Girls also can earn their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Each of these awards requires girls to meet requirements that help them prepare for, and then choose and complete, a special project benefiting their communities.
Girl Scouts do a lot of fun activities, such as ice skating at the MARC, watching the “Nutcracker” at the Grand Theater, touring the Woodson Art Museum, attending the “Smart Cookie” movie and “Breaking Dawn” movie, swimming, singing Christmas carols, and visiting Grampa’s Farm.
Scouts in the Merrill area also participate in community service projects. At Thanksgiving, girl scouts helped assemble the donations from Park City Credit Union for families in the Merrill area. Donations from scouts were given to the Lincoln County Humane Society through our annual Love-A-Pet event. Troops helped at the Haven fundraiser “Men in the Kitchen” and at the Soup Kitchen at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Scouts earn money through the fall nut/candy/magazine sale and the cookie sale. Last year troops used these funds locally for bowling/pizza parties, painting pottery, skating, going to movies, and attending Girl Scout Camps. Troop 7129 saved funds for four years and went to Disney World and Sea World in Orlando, FL. While there, the girls enjoyed the rides (Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Tower of Terror), learning about dolphins and other sea animals, and got wet watching Shamu! Troop 7128 saved their funds too, and traveled to Mackinac Island for a weekend of fun. There they visited Fort Mackinac, took a Carriage Tour of the Island, ate lunch at the Grand Hotel, and enjoyed the zip line and climbing wall at the Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park.
