Lincoln County Sheriff?s reports 1-15-14

The cold weather from last week kept deputies busy as they checked on several reports of concerns regarding domestic and farm animals. In all, half a dozen complaints were called in and checked on by deputies. None of the calls involved any neglect of animals but deputies provided advice to a couple of pet owners. On Wednesday a deputy assisted Town of Harding officials after a woman reported a frost covered dog walking on County Rd E near Burma Rd. The dog turned out to be a family pet who got out when the kids were going to school but came home unharmed two hours later.
The Corning Fire Department and a deputy responded for a reported oven fire on Wednesday afternoon. At 4 p.m., a cell 911 caller reported that a coil inside of an electric oven at a residence on Tesch Rd had started on fire. The dispatcher was able to instruct the caller to shut the oven door and unplug the oven which stopped the coil from burning. When a deputy arrived on the scene a few minutes later, he found the fire was out. Corning Firefighters were on the scene for a short time; no injuries were reported.
A 35-year-old Phillips man is in the Lincoln County Jail after a deputy investigated a theft Wednesday evening in the Town of Somo. Just before 5 p.m., a deputy was called to the BP Station in downtown Tripoli after it was reported that a man had pumped over $18 worth of gas and left without paying for it. The vehicle had initially left traveling east from the gas station but the deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description of the theft suspect heading back to the west and stopped it west of County Rd CC for a speeding violation. The 35-year-old provided incorrect personal information to the deputy, leading to him being taken into custody for obstructing. A check revealed his true identity and that he was out on bonds; one felony and one misdemeanor through Price County for charges including battery, recklessly endangering safety and bail jumping. As a condition of those bonds, the suspect was not allowed to drink alcohol. A roadside breath test confirmed the man had been drinking alcohol prior to the deputy stopping him. The man was taken into custody and brought to the Lincoln County Jail. There he was charged with theft, obstructing an officer and a felony and misdemeanor count of bail jumping. At a bond hearing on Thursday, a Lincoln County Judge set a $250 cash bond. Unable to post, the man remains in the Lincoln County Jail.
The Town of Crescent Fire Department and a deputy responded to a reported alarm on Thursday evening in the northern part of Harrison. At 6:35 p.m., a 911 caller reported alarms sounding inside of a residence on School Forest Rd. A deputy arrived at the same time as firefighters and a check of the residence revealed it to be a false alarm. The Town of Crescent provides fire service to the far northern part of the Lincoln County Town of Harrison under contract.
Snow caused problems on Lincoln County roadways this past Friday. Just before 3 p.m., deputies reported heavy snow began falling in the Merrill area which caused the roadways to become slippery quickly. The first incident occurred on US Hwy 51 south of County Rd Q when an SUV lost control and left the roadway rolling over. In all, three crashes and a few slide offs were investigated in the next hour with most incidents taking place between the Lincoln/Marathon County line and the State Rd 64 interchange. Two Troopers assisted deputies as they investigated the crashes. Traffic was finally moving again around 6 p.m.
A 53-year-old Merrill woman was arrested Friday evening for violating the terms of her probation. Deputies went to a home on Eagle Ridge Lane in the Town of Pine River at 6:30 p.m. after the Wisconsin Department of Corrections reported the woman’s home monitoring device was testing positive for alcohol. When deputies arrived, they administered a breath test and the woman again tested positive. She was taken into custody and brought to the Lincoln County Jail and held.
The Town of Corning Fire Department along with a deputy responded to a report of a piece of machinery on fire on Saturday morning. Just before noon, a cell 911 caller reported a male had started his Caterpillar at an address on Leafy Grove Rd in the Town of Corning to remove some snow when it started on fire. The initial report was the unit was engulfed in flames but was extinguished a short time later. Firefighters were on the scene for about half an hour.
A 38-year-old Tomahawk man was brought to the Lincoln County Jail on Saturday evening after a deputy came across a vehicle in the ditch on Lake Pesobic Rd near East Shore Drive in the Town of Merrill. The 38-year-old denied being the driver, telling the deputy a relative was driving. A short time later, the male admitted he was in fact driving the vehicle but he had lied because he had no driver’s license. Once at the jail, the suspect made several threats saying he was going to kill the deputy who arrested him along with the deputy’s family. The man was booked on charges of obstructing an officer and a felony count of threatening a witness along with probation violation.
