The Lincoln County Humane Society is working through more than 500 applications to adopt 57 dogs and puppies removed from a Gleason area home Dec. 21.
After the animals were surrendered to the Humane Society, the public responded with an outpouring of donations and offers to volunteer, including fostering shelter animals to make room for the new arrivals.
The surrendered dogs range in age from two weeks to eight years old. The Humane Society will not be reviewing applications for the nursing mothers and puppies until it is closer to the time they can be available for adoption. Some will not be ready for several weeks.
The Humane Society will use its web site at www.furrypets.com to post information about which animals have been adopted.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office will not be filing charges against the former tenants of the home on County Rd. J, from which the animals were removed. The animals’ owners had been evicted from the home and voluntarily surrendered the dogs. The dogs were found to be in good health when removed from the home.
According to the owners of the home, the dogs were not approved to be in the house and although there was heat available in the house, the tenants were not using it.
The dogs’ owners did not have a kennel license and a deputy was trying to assist them with that process which begins each year in January.
