Schmidt sacks awards

The excellent football season for Bluejay senior football player Tyler Schmidt has earned additional recognition from area and state coaches.
Schmidt – the GNC Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year (POY) at defensive end and two-time unanimous First Team selection –was named to the  All-Region squad and also picked up Honorable Mention to the All-State team.
“Tyler is well-deserving of these awards,” MHS coach Nick Sturm said. “His ability to disrupt opponents’ blocking schemes and force double teams was impressive.
“He made it very difficult for offenses all year long, and he makes everybody else’s job a little easier. He had a very good high school career and was honored for his efforts.”
Schmidt finished the Bluejays’ season with 39 solo and 23 assisted tackles. He made six tackles for a loss and 2-1/2 sacks, forced three fumbles and recovered two. He also blocked a kick.
Schmidt recently signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UW-Madison and wrestle for the Badgers, starting with the 2014-15 season.
