Post 93 takes first two
The Tomahawk American Legion Post 93 baseball team jumped off to a great start, crushing Gogebic 23-1 in last Saturday’s season opener at Tyler Kahle Memorial Park, then bumping off Lakeland 12-4 later the same day.
A five-run 2nd gave Post 93 a 5-1 lead over the T-Birds, and Tomahawk jumped it to 12-1 with three in the 3rd and four in the 4th. Lakeland did manage three in the 5th.
“This was a pretty solid team effort,” Post 93 manager Wes Roessler said. “We had one inning where the wheels kind of fell off, but they didn’t let it get out of hand.
“Fletcher pitched very well. He always keeps his pitch count low and keeps the opposing batters off balance. He also had a big day at the plate. We had some of the younger players make some big plays and have good at bats today. That is nice to see.”
Schoone scattered 11 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. None of the runs were earned.
Schoone helped his cause with a 4-for-5 day at the plate with a double. Jared Jarvensivu (2-4), Chris Dalliere (1-1, 3 RBI), Jordan Shilts (1-3, 2 RBI), and Aaron Leonhard (4 W) paced the offense to 9 hits and 9 walks.
Post 93 grabbed a 10-1 lead by the bottom of the 2nd inning, tacked on two in the 3rd before exploding for 11 in the 4th.
“We had a lot of kids hit the ball hard today,” Roessler said. “Some of the guys had a big day at the plate which was a nice start to their Legion season.
“Jon (Nyberg) pitched another solid game. He never let the Gogebic batters really start a threat. This was a nice opportunity for the guys to focus on their at bats and situational hitting.”
Tomahawk pounded out 12 hits to go with 13 walks. Leading the charge were Lorne Ahrens (3-5, 2B, 3B, 5 RBI), Leonhard (3-3, 3 R, 3 RBI), Trevor Iwen (3-4, 2B, 3B, 4 R, 2 RBI), Nyberg (1-3, 2B, 4 R), Jacob Sabielny (1-1, 2B, 2 RBI) and Schiltz (2 RBI).
Nyberg (3 H, 3 W, 9 K, 1 R, 0 ER in 5 I) picked up the Legion season where he left off the high school year.
