After months of wrangling, the Fiscal Control Board voted Tuesday evening to go ahead with the Jefferson School construction. By a vote of 13-6 the board approved the measure with an estimated price tag of $550,000 for the building and $23,600 for the land which is on Jackson Street in the sixth ward. School Superintendent Roger Lowney expressed his extreme gratitude to the board for taking the action; the school project is expected to be completed by January of 1974 depending on bids.
Merrill will soon be invaded by Lions! Members of the state’s Lion’s club that is. For the next eight to ten weeks Lincoln Bowling Lanes will be the site of the Lion’s annual state bowling tournament. Merrill Lion’s Club president Michael Nolan and Mayor Ralph Voigt will welcome the bowlers starting this Saturday. In all over 2,000 bowlers will come to Merrill. A special ad welcoming the visitors notes excellent dinner specials around town. Club Modern will have a dinner buffet that includes chicken, roast beef, sirloin tips, and BBQ ribs, all for $1.95. Dick’s Riverside Club will offer 1/2 a fried chicken for $1.65 or a T-bone steak dinner for $2.35. And all day Friday at Champs a fish fry is .85 cents. For entertainment E&K Tap will have the Music Boys, Gary’s Bar will host Sherlock, and Lincoln Lanes will have the Music Men.
From the sport’s page the Merrill Blue Jays had their share of triumph this past week on the mats, but a shattering loss on the hardwood. Even Merrill’s wrestling coach Norris Hattlestad was pleasantly surprised by the showing of his team at Medford over the weekend. With a team score of 129 and six individual champions the Jays won the WIAA Regional on Saturday. Nine wrestlers are now qualified for the sectional at Everest this weekend. Don Kerr’s basketball team had a heartbreaking loss to Shawano Friday. The visitors used an extremely aggressive defense to limit the Jay’s top scorers Rick Semling and Dave VanDerGeest to only two points. Leading the scoring for the team was Bruce Muchinske and Bob Grunenwald. The Jays will travel to Stevens Point on Friday as they try once again to achieve a new school record of nine wins in a season.

Local primary winners were announced in both city and state offices. State Representative Lloyd Kincaid, a democrat from Crandon will face off against republican Representative Sheehan Donoghue for the 12th Senatorial District in April. Kincaid had the only challenger on the ballot as he defeated Charles Arndt of Eagle River for the chance to replace recently retired Senator Clifford “Tiny” Krueger of Merrill. On the local front current City Clerk Judith Stockowitz will face off against Lynn Jon Henrich for the City Clerk’s position. Stockowitz was appointed City Clerk after the death of long time Clerk Bob Klug. Stockowitz, Henrich, and Frank Kloth faced off in the primary spot with Kloth coming in third in the voting.
A rescue team led by Sgt. Paul Proulx of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department found two stranded skiers in the Underdown Recreation Area on Saturday. Three teenagers from the Fox Valley area had gone skiing around 3 p.m. when they became lost. They abandoned their skis and began walking but after some time two of the teens collapsed from weakness. The third teen kept walking eventually reaching a house two miles away from the parking area on Copper Lake Ave where help was summonsed. The missing pair was reached by snowmobile and one of the teens was unconscious. They were taken by ambulance to Holy Cross Hospital where they were treated and released. Another missing person search Monday morning involved an 18 year old Corning teen who ran out of gas while riding his snowmobile near Highland Ave. The youth walked back to his house and got a gas can, and when he stopped at the Corning Ballroom he learned of the five hour search. He was cold and wet but unharmed.
The Merrill Blue Jay girls’ basketball team clinched their first ever basketball title and ran their undefeated streak to 17 games with two wins last week. A lopsided contest against Wausau East on Friday found the girls scoring 34 straight points before the Lumberjacks could get on the board. On the wrestling side, the Merrill team advanced to sectionals after taking first place Saturday at the tournament held in the MHS Fieldhouse. Kent Reinhardt and Jay VanDerGeest both won titles in the tournament. The sectional meet will be held in Menominee on Saturday.

It will now be up to the state legislature if Lincoln County will get a second judge. The county board voted on Tuesday 17-5 to give its support to the second branch. If approved the new judge could be installed by 1995. Judge J. Michael Nolan handles the court cases in Lincoln County but often has to rely on outside judges to assist with the caseload. The administrator of the 9th judicial district court James Seidel noted the current case load calls for 1.5 judges and the additional full time judge would be needed by 1997 according to their estimates. The state pays for the judge’s salary but the county is responsible for courtroom space and office support.
