The Bluejay hockey team was forced to endure one endless period in last Thursday’s home game with Wis. Rapids.
The Raiders racked up eight first-period goals and eventually won by the 8-0 score.
“We had an extremely rough first period, which I kind of expected was going to happen,” MHS coach Chase Nelson said. “We have not had a full team practice for about 2 weeks now. The flu bug has hit our team hard.
“We were missing one player for this game, and had another 4-5 kids playing sick. You could just see the lack of energy from the start.
“Rapids is a very good team, which at one point this season was ranked #8 in the state. After getting down 8-0 after the first period, the kids really played outstanding team defense the last two periods, holding them scoreless. Unfortunately we were not able to put any pucks into the net ourselves. We did have some opportunities, but just did not capitalize.”
Rapids notched its first goal with 1:43 elapsed, tacked on three more by the time the clock wound down to 10:34 of a 17:00 period, then pushed it to 6-0 with a pair of Dan Overfelt scores within a 33-second span.
Matt Edwards pushed his game tally to hattrick level with additional scores with 3:28 and :46 left in the first. He also scored Rapids’ third goal.
Overfelt also had an assist, and Logan Zimmerman set up two goals. Cody Kohls gave a goal and an assist. Fourteen different Raiders got involved in the scoring.
