The girls at Copper Lake School were full of Holiday Spirit when they started a community service project several months ago. Out of love for the Foster Grandparents who volunteer at Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake Schools they started working hard crocheting blankets for each Foster Grandma and Grandpa. They wanted to express their gratitude for all that the Foster Grandparents do for the young men and women at Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake Schools each day.
While doing this project they were asked to outreach even further out into the community and make blankets for our Alumni Foster Grandparents who still live at home and some who live in assisted living centers throughout our community and surrounding communities.
“They were thrilled to have the opportunity do this and put love into every special blanket,” said Donna Nash, Foster Grandparent Volunteer Coordinator. “No two blankets were alike they all had a variety of different colors and unique designs created by each of the girls. It was a true project of love, thoughtfulness, and care.
Some girls learned to crochet just to be part of this project; those who did not crochet made holiday cards to put in each grandparents gift bag. This turned out to be quite the project and around 40 blankets were made.
A small group of girls were chosen to present the blankets to active volunteers during a holiday event at the school. The girls sang Christmas songs, enjoyed treats and presented each grandparent their holiday package containing the one of kind blanket along with a huge hug and big smile. As they handed the gift bags to the grandparents some of the comments were: “This is the best Christmas ever,” “This is just beautiful,” “Wow is this for me” and “Oh this is my favorite color.” There were even some tears of joy!
The girls who had the privilege of handing them out were just glowing with pride. Some of their thoughts and responses; Tia said, “I felt so awesome and wanted to stay longer and so thrilled that all the Grandpa’s blankets matched their shirts!” Labrina said, “I feel really, really good and happy.”
When the blankets were delivered into the community each Alumni Foster Grandparent was just thrilled and wanted the girls to know just how special they felt and how thankful they were that someone still cared and remembered the outstanding volunteer service they contributed to their community.
“The girls who worked on this amazing project are truly angels; they spread holiday cheer throughout the community through their hard work and dedication,” Nash said. “They truly gave back to the community in a special way, and each day the Grandparents use their blankets whether they are alumni volunteers or active volunteers, they will think of these special students at Copper Lake and Lincoln Hills Schools and know that they are cared about.”
