THS wrestlers best Athens, Ashland

Tuesday’s match with Athens was a see-saw pin-fest, but complete-team Tomahawk ultimately prevailed 43-36.
“Every dual for us is a wild one,” THS coach Bob Garrou said. “We were leading four matches by 6-8 points and got pinned. At 170, we were up 13-1 and got pinned. We’re wrestling with great technique and make one mistake and those seniors made them pay for it. Those are freshman mistakes. We’ve got to learn how to get off our backs. Hopefully it gets better because those are talented kids.”
Every match ended early until the seventh bout, with Athens leading 24-18. But the Hatchets collected points from the seventh duel with a 12-7 Kaleb Kaminski (160) decision, and used another fall by Austin Bellile (195, 4:29), a major decision by Adam FauFau (220, 10-0) and forfeits to Jake Borchardt (182) and Cullen Wegener (106) to seal the deal.
Also picking up pins for Tomahawk were: Austin Story (120, 3:58), Nate Flohr (132, :22) and Bryan Tomek (138, 2:23).
“Austin was dominated and pinned at Wabeno by this same kid, but this time he dominated and pinned,” Garrou said. “It was a complete turn-around.”
All six Athens wins came on falls, over Kevin Zurfluh (113, 1:06), Hans Leck (126, :31), Hunter Vian (145, 1:27), Slade Erdman (152, 1:00), Dane Borchardt (170, 2:48) and Mitch Schauer (285, 2:33).
Oredocker Ease
The Tomahawk High School wrestling team headed north to Ashland Friday for an easy 65-11 win.
Despite an early scare with two Ashland wins, the Hatchets combined five pins and were given four weight classes on forfeits, were never in any real trouble after the forth match of the evening.
Travis Oliphant of Ashland opened the evening at 138 pounds by winning a 17-2 tech fall over Bryan Tomek to make the score 5-0 Ashland. Quinton Wallenfang of Tomahwak quickly struck back at 145 pounds by pinning Ben Cashman in 2:41. Slade Erdman then scored a 10-5 decision at 152 pounds against Zack Trubachik to make it 9-5 Tomahawk. Ashland’s Cory Kontny pinned Zack Kaminski in 1:55 at 160 pounds for the last score for the hosts.
After a 16-2 major decision over Jon Litersky at 170 pounds, the Hatchets won the next seven matches by either pin or forfeit. Austin Bellile at 195 bounds pinned Nate Weaver in 34 seconds, Adam FauFau pinned Allen Wallberg at 220 pounds in 1:29 and Mitchell Schauer got a pin at heavyweight in 1:34 over Ben Gierczic.
Jacob McGuire scored an 11-0 major decision over Jorge Rounwind at 126 pounds and Nate Flohr pinned his 132 pound opponent Joe Boyle in 46 seconds to round out the contested weight wins for the Hatchets.
