Hobart ?Hobie? Hinz

Hobart “Hobie” Hinz, 81, of Merrill, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at his home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services. He was born January 21, 1931 in Merrill to the late Henry & Cecelia (Adams) Hinz. On April 12, 1958 he and Joan Edbauer were united in marriage in Merrill.
Hobie was a graduate of Merrill Senior High School. He served in the Army National Guard from 1949 – 1957. In the 1950’s, he and some friends started the “Rock Island Ski Club” and they performed for the public at his parents’ bar, Rock Island Resort. Hobie worked as a superintendent with R.O.W. Window Unit in Merrill, for over 30 years, then working at Kolbe & Kolbe until his retirement. Hobie enjoyed hunting deer and partridge, fishing for walleye and bass and spending time in the woods at his cabin.
Hobie loved his family. He was married 54 years to the love of his life, Joan, they lovingly raised 8 children and were blessed with 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He especially looked forward to his “little ones” who visited him often, sat at his bedside and made him smile. He was fortunate enough to stay in his home, while his family cared for him and surrounded him as he entered into his heavenly home. He will be greatly missed by his many family and friends.
Survivors include his wife: Joan Hinz, Merrill; four daughters: Sherry Riddle, Joleen (Bryan) Buehler, Sue Hinz, and Tammy (Kevin) Cohrs; three sons: Dan Hinz, Greg (Jennifer) Hinz and Steve Hinz; 11 grandchildren: Erin, Noah & Andy Riddle, Chad (Candy) Hinz, Samantha Buehler, Evan, Ian & Lauren Cohrs, Adam & Jessica Hinz and Joe Hinz; seven great-grandchildren: Carter, Jayden, Montana, MaKayla, Gabby, Elizabeth and Scarlet; and one sister: Joan Stumke. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Jordan Buehler.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Waid Funeral Home. Father Mike McLain will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow. The family would especially like to thank all the “angels” who cared for Hobie during his struggle with cancer: including Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice staff, the nurses and volunteers at Good Samaritan, Dr. Islam and Dr. Moore for giving him the dignity and respect he so deserved. Waid Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.waidfuneral.com.
