Ethel Scheffler

Ethel Augusta (Loewecke) Scheffler, 95, entered eternal rest on January 30 at Bell Tower Residence in Merrill.
Ethel was the third child born of William and Helen (Michaelis) Loewecke on March 30, 1916 in New London, WI. On October 16, 1936 Ethel married Arthur “Shep” Scheffler of Merrill . He preceded her in death in 1993.
Her childhood was spent in New London, WI. As a resident of Merrill, she was a “career woman”. Ethel worked at Mead’s Department Store, the Lincoln County Welfare Department and then performed thousands of hours of stenography and transcription as Court Reporter for Lincoln County until her retirement in 1974. Ethel enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards and spending weekends “at the lake” with Shep and many other family members. Having no children of her own, she was a loving presence in the lives of her three nieces. Ethel was a member of St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ in Merrill.
Ethel is survived by brother-in-law Gordon King of Merrill as well as three nieces and two nephews and their families. A very special friend and care-giver, Mary Ann Borchardt, also survives. She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters Edith, Helen and Margaret; and brothers William, Robert and Richard.
The family extends sincere thanks to all of Ethel’s caregivers at Bell Tower Residence and Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
Waid Funeral Home of Merrill assisted the family with arrangements. A memorial gathering for family members will be held at a later date.
