Lester W. Becker

Lester W. Becker, age 88, of Merrill, died Friday, February 25, 2011, at Walnut Grove, Merrill.
Lester was born October 4, 1922, in Merrill, son of the late William and Ida (Severt) Becker. He married Mildred Hertell on February 1, 1947, in Merrill. She preceded him in death on May 18, 1988. Lester served his country during WWII as a Corporal in the United States Air Force. He enlisted in Fort Sheridan, Illinois on December 29, 1942. He was stationed in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Lester’s Decorations and Citations included: European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with six Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. Lester was honorably discharged on November 8, 1945. Lester had worked at Trego Transfer and Hargrave Appliance. He was member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Merrill. He was also a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Social and Sick Benevolent Society, and V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill. Lester played the cornet/trumpet in local bands. He enjoyed occasional casino trips, Brewers games, traveling with family, bowling in tournaments, and listening to Big Band music. Lester also enjoyed watching his favorite football teams; Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Norte Dame Fighting Irish.
Survivors include one brother, Donald (Jean) Becker, of Gleason; and many nieces and nephews. Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; one son, Lance ‘Pete’ Becker; one brother, Robert Becker; and one-sister-in-law, Sandy Becker.
The Funeral Mass will be at 12:00 P.M., Noon, Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Merrill. Father Michael McLain will preside. Burial will take place in Merrill Memorial Park, with graveside Military Rites conducted by V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, at the funeral home, and at the church on Wednesday after 11:00A.M. The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family with arrangements.
