Trio arrested for making meth now face federal charges

Three Merrill men arrested in January by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department investigators in connection with a meth lab raid in the Town of Rock Falls were indicted last Monday by a federal grand jury in Madison.

David Bienfang, Hal Mulford and Christopher Schmeltzer are all charged with conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in meth, and conspiracy to make meth. Bienfang and Mulford are also charged with possessing the ingredients or equipment used to make meth.

All three pled not guilty at their arraignment last Monday in federal court. A jury trial is scheduled for November 8th.

The LCSD investigators arrested Bienfang on January 4 after receiving a tip that he was making meth at a remote cabin in the Town of Rock Falls. Bienfang is also charged in Lincoln County with possession of meth and four other drug-related felonies.
