THS boys split games to move to 3-1

Dec. 5, 2012 | 0 comments

The Hatchets took a 76-61 game from Rib Lake last Tuesday to improve to 3-0 on the season, but Medford captured a 57-48 contest on Friday in both teams’ GNC opener.
“We played pretty well offensively,” THS coach Tim Albert said. “We shared the basketball well, and finished well around the rim. We also did a nice job of getting to the free throw line and converting our opportunities.”
“We took pretty good care of the basketball, but a couple of our turnovers were bad decisions that led to easy baskets.  We want to clean those up as we head to the GNC season.”
The Hatchets raced to a 15-4 start and built a 24-9 lead after just one quarter. The squads each scored 14 in the second and THS bumped it to 49-33 through three. Tomahawk twice kicked the lead up to 21 in the fourth–the last at 64-43 with 3:47 left–before settling for the 15-point win.
Jon Nyberg paced the team with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Other offerings came from; Jared Jarvensivu (16 p, 3 r, 8 a); Chris Schoone (8 p, 5 r, 3 st); Jordan Roessler (11 p, 3 a); Fletcher Schoone (8 p, 3 r); Lorne Ahrens (7 p); Jon Barkholz (4 p).
Tomahawk–FG: 28-49 (57%); FT: 17-25 (68%).
Raided!
Medford started with a 14-7 first quarter and held the lead at 24-14 and 39-27 after the next two frames. THS did cut it to 47-40 in the early fourth, but the Red Raiders put it away with easy baskets and free throws.
“This is by far the best team we’ve played so far, and we didn’t play very well offensively,” Albert said. “We had too many turnovers and they took advantage of those turnovers. We also didn’t play very good defensively and gave up several layups. We’ve got some work to do as we get ready for our next GNC game on Friday night against Antigo at the Fieldhouse.”
Hatchet contributions came from: Jarvensivu (11 p, 4 r, 3 a); C. Schoone (8 p, 4 r); Nyberg (4 p, 10 r); Barkholz (8 p); Ahrens (4 r, 3 st); and Roessler (4 p).
Tomahawk–FG: 13-42 (31%); FT: 4-6 (66%).
