Everest rains goals on MHS kickers
The Merrill boys soccer team played D.C. Everest heads up for the whole first half of Thursday’s game at the MARC.
The Evergreens’ Jon Rohr scored twice to kick off the second half for a 2-0 lead. Bluejay midfielder Logan Brunett cut the lead in half when he scored a David Pophal pass, but an accidental own goal gave D.C.E. a 3-1 lead.
“We competed in the first half and kept it tied at zero’s,” MHS coach Chris Behrens said.
“The weather played a vital role in the momentum of the game. The wind changed and aided in their first goal. We picked up and scored to make it 2-1. We had a handful of great opportunities to tie the game.
“There was an unfortunate situation that ended up in an own goal, and the momentum had changed for good in Everest’s favor.”
Everest would notch two more after that, as the wind and rain picked up later in the second half. Dylan Sebo and Ian Hill tallied the goals.
Merrill’s Nathan Beyer and Everest’s Nate Kitchell each made six saves.
Everest improved to 6-1-2 in runner-up position in the WVC, while the Bluejays dropped to 0-6-2.
