Youth counselor at Copper Lake School saves student's life
A youth counselor at the Wisconsin Department of Corrections' Copper Lake School in Irma is credited with saving the life of a choking student.
At around 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 a female student started choking while eating a meal. Other youth in the room began yelling about the girl choking and Youth Counselor Jeffrey Butler aided the student by performing the Heimlich maneuver and removing the lodged food.
The noise of the youth drew the attention of Supervising Youth Counselor Paula Stoudt who observed Butler performing the Heimlich which successfully dislodged a piece of potato from the girl's throat allowing her to breathe.
The girl appeared stunned by the incident but was able to breathe normally because of Butler's actions, said Stoudt. The girl was able to finish the rest of her meal without problems.
"I'm very proud of Youth Counselor Butler for his life saving actions during this medical emergency," said Department of Corrections Secretary Gary Hamblin. "This is a great example of the dedication of staff in providing a safe environment in our institutions. The professionalism of our staff and the quality of training they receive is clearly demonstrated by the youth counselor's quick thinking and lifesaving actions."
Stoudt and the Department of Corrections commend Butler for his important response during the medical emergency. Due to his actions, the girl was able to breathe normally and suffered no injuries or soreness from the Heimlich maneuver.
