Merrill firefighters give back to community
Merrill Firefighters Charities recently presented a check for $1,000 to Dan Wendorf, City of Merrill Park Department Director, to assist in the cost of rebuilding the storage shed/announcers booth located at Ott's Park in Merrill. The old booth was nearly 30 years old and in need of major repairs due to age, weather and vandalism. The new structure will be fully enclosed and more user friendly for the numerous organizations that hold events at Ott's Park throughout the years to come. The new structure will also have an upgraded concession area, along with storage for diamond equipment and the announcer's booth.
The monies donated for this park upgrade project were raised by the Merrill Firefighters in August at Ott's Park from the 33rd Annual Allan Soward Memorial Softball Tournament. In the past the Merrill Firefighters have donated over $300,000 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association from the proceeds raised through this event and others.
Recently the firefighters have established their own charity and will still donate to the MDA but a portion of the proceeds will be used locally to help charities within the Merrill area as well. All future fundraising events sponsored by the Merrill Firefighter Charities will continue to benefit local projects and needy organizations. The firefighters in Merrill would like to thank all those who have sponsored or participated in any of their past fundraisers, in an effort to help those in need.
