Lincoln County Veterans Services hosting coat drive
With winter fast approaching, the race is on to ensure all of Wisconsin's homeless veterans have adequate clothing for warmth. There are currently homeless veterans living all across Wisconsin with 250-350 in the city of Milwaukee alone. To help address this need, Lincoln County Veteran's Service Officer, Richard Wolf began the Coat Drive in Lincoln County this month.
What is the Coat Drive? It is a community effort to collect winter clothing such as coats, sweaters, long underwear, warm socks, hats, scarves, gloves and even (new) blankets. When asked why a coat drive is necessary in the northern part of the state when so many of the veterans are located in urban areas CVSO Richard Wolf explains, "Many of this- and other- county's homeless veterans end up in Milwaukee because we lack the resources to help them. This is one way we can ensure they are not left out in the cold. We have a responsibility to our former protectors."
The current drop off site for the Coat Drive is the Veteran's Service Office at 801 N. Sales St., Suite 104, Merrill WI 54452. Drop offs can also be made at the Tomahawk Annex on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Pick-ups can also be arranged in Rhinelander, Tomahawk, and Antigo by calling 715-539-1083. The Lincoln County Veteran's Service Facebook page will be updated as additional drop off locations are added. The items collected during the Coat Drive will be transported to The Homeless Veteran's Initiative during the Thanksgiving week and right before Christmas. The drive will end on Dec. 14.
