Car fire on Hwy. 17
On Wednesday at approximately 9:34 p.m., Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a car fire on Hwy. 17 near the intersection of Heinneman Road.
Upon deputies’ arrival, it was found that the car, being operated by Robert Shattuck, Jr., was fully engulfed. Shattuck told deputies on scene that the fuse box on the passenger side of the interior compartment had started smoking while he was traveling northbound on Hwy. 17. Then the compartment started on fire, at which point Shattuck pulled the car over as the rest of the interior of the vehicle and engine compartment started on fire. Shattuck removed himself from the vehicle and called for assistance. He was not injured in the incident.
Town of Russell Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 9:36 p.m. and arrived on scene to put out the fire at approximately 9:45 p.m. The fire was successfully contained and eliminated.
The vehicle was a total loss due to fire and water damage, and it was removed from the scene by Rod’s Wrecker Towing Service.
During this incident, the portion of Hwy. 17 surrounding the vehicle was shut down, and traffic was re-routed. The highway reopened to traffic at about 10:20 p.m.
