Price earns Eagle Scout award
Lawrence E. Price, Jr., 18, of Merrill, has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award. Price was honored in ceremonies on Oct. 27, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church.
A member of Troop 503, sponsored by VFW Schmitt-Manecke-Donnor Post 1638, Price is one of approximately 4% of all Boy Scouts who attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Troop 503 is chartered by Post 1638 and has had 59 boys continue on to earn the Eagle rank.
Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community-, church-, or synagogue-related service project to earn his Eagle. Price earned 24 merit badges and chose to lead a service project consisting of removing old bluebird houses and building and erecting 15 new bird houses for Council Grounds of Merrill. The overall project benefited Council Grounds, Merrill, and the environment by providing new birdhouses to replace the loss of natural habitat.
Price has been a member of the Boy Scout program since the age of 6, starting as a Tiger Scout and Bobcat in Germany, continuing on as Wolf and Bear in Kansas, and Webelos and Boy Scouts in Merrill. He has served as patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, and quartermaster within his troop.
Price is a member Trinity Lutheran Church and is a senior at Merrill High School. He was a nominee and attendee of the National Young Leaders State Conference in Saint Paul, MN. He has worked for the past 4 summers at Tesomas/Akela's World Boy Scout Camps in Rhinelander and is a 4-time nominee for staff member of the week.
Price plans to continue his studies at UW Marathon and later Stevens Point upon graduation from high school and to continue working summers at Akela's World Cub Scout Camp.
Boy Scout Troop 503 has over the years done community service projects throughout the city of Merrill, including Eagle Scout projects in city parks, for churches, and Council Grounds. Boy Scout Troop 503 annually participates in the Scouting for Food program, collecting food for the Community Food Pantry of Merrill.
