Merrill Marching Jays earn state runner up award
The Merrill Marching Jays placed first in musical presentation among class AAA bands at the State Marching Band Competition held at UW-Whitewater on Oct. 13. The Marching Jays also finished second overall in the Class AAA division at the State Competition.
The Marching Jays completed a very successful marching band season with competitions at West De Pere, D.C. Everest, Merrill, Chippewa Falls, and Menomonie, in addition to the State competition in Whitewater. The percussion section of the band received the "best percussion" award at West De Pere, D.C. Everest, Merrill, and Chippewa Falls. Merrill took second in percussion at Menomonie and State, missing first by only 1/10 of a point. The band also received "best visual performance" at the West De Pere competition.
This year's show was entitled "We Can Do It." The show begins with the sounds of 1941 radio and the start of America's involvement in World War II. As soldiers were sent to various locations throughout the world at that time, the factories were called upon to support the war effort. The women that were needed to replace men and occupy the factory jobs were collectively referred to as "Rosie the Riveter," and their work enabled the factories to get the products ready to send overseas.
The Marching Jays consist of 65 members. They are directed by Kevin Short and Matt Callope, with assistance from Jeff Schram, Michael Chula, and drill editor Barry Kramer. The percussion section is led by Greg Goetsch and Dave Peters. The music was written and arranged by Andrew Putnam and Dave Peters, and the visual design was by Jeff Wroblewski and Haili Drury. Drum majors are Steven Clark, Megan Wayda, and Dillon Chieves. Color guard commanders are Kayla Billman, Jessica Kautz, and Melonia Duginski.
The Marching Jays wish to thank the Merrill High School Band Boosters, the staff, administration, and school board of the Merrill Area Public School District, as well as the community of Merrill for their continued support.
