Tyler Schmidt points to his family and numerous MHS fans in the Kohl Center after becoming Merrill's first state champion since Brad Welter in 2007.

Three of Merrill's four entries in the WIAA state wrestling tourament reached the finals. Junior Tyler Schmidt took the 220-pound title, and senior Garrett Schmelling (126) and junior David Pophal (170) battled with two-time state champions before collecting runner-up finishes. Sophomore Mason Reinhardt bounced back from a semi-final loss to lock down a third place finish.
