Exhibit honors 100 years
Lynn Reindl, Reindl Printing of Merrill, has donated artifacts to celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting. The Girl Scout anniversary exhibit is on display in the lower level of the Heritage Center at 100 E. 3rd St.
Creation of the Girl Scout organization resulted from the spirited work of Georgia debutante Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low in 1912. The American version was adapted from the Girl Guides organization in the United Kingdom. Low began with 18 girls from Savannah, GA. She set out to get women out of an isolated home environment and into community service and the outdoors. Her first events included knot-tying, campfire building and troops that hiked, played basketball and learned how to tell time by the stars.
The national organization has grown to 3.4 million members. There are more than 50 million women in America who are Girl Scout alumnae.
The 100th Anniversary exhibit honors the contributions the movement has made to young women and to rally support for the next century of Girl Scouts.
The exhibit will be open by appointment.
