MAPS: Opportunities and Challenges
I love the beginning of a new school year. Much like a new calendar year, resolutions abound, and the promise of great things and new opportunities is on everyone's mind.
However, despite the positive feelings that come with a new year, we must also be aware of the fact that we will face challenges, some of which we cannot predict.
Like many other school districts, MAPS must deal with difficult budget deficits, changes at the state and federal levels, and all of the other challenges that are part of a school year. As someone who has been professionally involved in education for decades, I know that it's not only challenges that are important, but how we address them.
Ours is a community that has a long history of rallying together to make decisions in the best interests of our schools and students. It's a community where students, staff, and families have a common objective, and with an open mind to new ideas, we can successfully reach our goals. We know how to put aside our differences and focus on the values that we share.
For years, our district and communities have supported each other in celebrations of victory, accomplishment, and success. We've also helped each other during tough times, sharing burdens and offering a hand or shoulder when needed. These are the qualities that make the Merrill area community a great place to live and work.
Everyone might not agree with every decision made by the board or me, but I promise that we will work transparently, engaging community members in the process, addressing questions and concerns, and focusing on the best interests of our students, schools, and community.
In return, I ask that as our students start a new school year, you take a moment to reflect on the success that we've had in the past and try to keep an open mind as we pave the way toward a successful future.
As always, I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your interim superintendent.
