After almost a year and a half the end may be in sight to end a dispute in the courts between Lincoln County Sheriff Alfred Giese and two of his deputies. Giese had suspended and then discharged chief deputy Harvey Woodward in 1971 after Giese claimed his deputies work at the sheriff's pleasure. Woodward and Deputy Theodore Cortazzo, who was also let go, contended their jobs fell under civil service rules and filed a civil suit which was being heard by an Ashland County Judge. Giese was defeated in the November election by Robert Basset, leading Giese to withdraw his claim through his attorney Leonard Schmitt. Both Woodward and Cortazzo will be eligible for reimbursement of retirement benefits totaling about $600 per man.

Directors include Richard Ruge, Joe Jackelen, and Lester Bares. Meanwhile the Lincoln County Democratic party elected Vivian Laidlaw as chairman, succeeding Nancy Meier. Violet Walbeck was elected to secretary, Albert Bollery first vice chairman and Stanley Frisch as second vice chairman.

Kerr expects to start Tom Rajek, Bruce Muchinske, Dave Van DerGeest, Bob Grunenwald and Rick Semling.

State Senator Clifford "Tiny" Krueger has made a shocking announcement that he will resign his senate seat that he has held for the last 35 years, two years short of the end of his term. In an open letter to the people of the 12th district Krueger cited demands for serving, which are now greater than any time since he started serving in 1947. The resignation will allow enough time for a special election for the post this coming April.
Four Merrill men have been severely injured Tuesday in an explosion at the Nekoosa Paper Mill while working for Taylor Insulation of Merrill. Reuben Maluegge, his son Mark Maluegge, Ellsworth Jaeger, and Jerrald Laak all suffered burns in the incident. Reuben Maluegge is listed in good condition at Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids while the other three were flown to the University of Wisconsin Hospital burn unit. All three were listed in critical condition this morning. According to the Nekoosa police, the accident occurred at 8:38 a.m. when the workers were insulating a 28 foot high tank at the mill containing sodium chlorate. A leak in the 36,000 gallon tank apparently caused it to collapse spreading the hot chemical onto the nearby workers.
The Merrill Blue Jay girls basketball team remains unbeaten after knocking off two valley teams this past week. The girls beat Antigo this past Friday 61-28 and outclassed Wausau East on Tuesday 73-22. Despite the positive play this past week coach Bob Yuska knows they will have their hands full this week when the Marshfield Tigers invade the field house this Friday.

A summers worth of hard work and plenty of dirty clothes have paid off for two Merrill teenagers who recently made a large donation to the Merrill Fire Departments Toys for Tots program. Jason Schulz and John Willis spent their summer digging through junk piles for bicycle parts to assemble 15 bikes which will now go to needy children in the area just in time for Christmas. The pair are members of the Merrill Busy Bees 4-H Club which stressed recycling in each of its monthly projects this year.
The Merrill Blue Jay boys basketball team is perfect in the valley with two conference wins this past week. The boys stuck Marshfield 70-62 last Tuesday before returning home to defeat D. C. Everest 61-55 on Friday. Brad Knab, Jay Jesperson and Bill Ott were all stand outs in the contests. In wrestling, division one poll leader Merrill took on division three headliner Athens last week resulting in Athens defeating the Jay's 40-24. The lead changed throughout the contest before Athens put it away with late pins.
