The Merrill City Council will begin the process of a possible restructuring of city government this Tuesday. Based on recommendations from the Mayor's Committee on Restructuring the three ordinances include: replacing the elected city clerk's position with an appointed Personal-Director-Comptroller, abolishing the elected city treasurer and replacing it with an appointed office, and replacing the elected street commissioner with an appointed superintendent of streets. Some aldermen have expressed a desire to have the voters decide the future of the positions. If the council takes no action on Tuesday it will be considered a first reading only, meaning formal action will probably not take place until December.
